SMJFL WRAP UP ARTICLE - ROUNDS 1-9 & INTERLEAGUE SERIES

The 2025 SMJFL football season is in full swing as we wrap up the first nine rounds of games, and our Interleague matches. We welcome all the Under 8 players who have played their first football match in the SMJFL. With an incredible six U8 Divisions including girls Under 8/9 Divisions this season the SMJFL is excited to see what is to come.

We want to welcome all new, players, teams, coaches, umpires, volunteers, and families that have helped our league to reach success.
SMJFL hosted a Season Launch Match between East Brighton Vampires and Caulfield Bears Under 15 Boys Div 1 Grand Finalist from last year. It was a thrilling match highlighting pure talent, intensity, competitiveness and a fierce determination to win by both sides. It was a tight match, but East Brighton Vampires were victorious on 24th April 2025. We were also excited to have Razer Ray former AFL umpire come to the SMJFL season Launch corporate event.
ROUND ONE
The first round of football was the “Welcome to Footy Round” and it kicked off strong with the 69 different grades and 26 clubs beginning their 2025 season of football on 27th of April.
ROUND TWO
In round two the competition became more intense as clubs found their groove. The mixed Under 12 Division 1 teams had big wins and the leaders began to shine through. Mordialloc-Braeside JFC defeated Ormond JFC, as did, East Sandringham JFC as they came through against Bentleigh JFC. For Mordi-Brae, Harley Stein scored a spectacular 4 goals to add to the impressive 15 goals the team scored altogether.

ROUND THREE
Round three brought the heat as the competition was fierce as teams brought their A game to the field. The Under 16 Division 1 Girls’ results showed exceptional work by teams to gain powerful leads against their opponents. East Brighton Vampires JFC defeated Beaumaris JFC, and East Sandringham JFC was defeated by Port Melbourne Colts JFC. The Colts Claudia Kogler (7 goals) and Demi Turnbull (5 goals) putting their goal kicking skills on full display. Round 3 brought on tight contests for the Division 1 Under 16 boys as the two games in the grade came down to a 5 and 2-point difference at the final whistle. South Melbourne districts JFC won against Mordi-Brae / Dingley. Murrumbeena JFC / St Peters FC defeated AJAX in a nail-biting game that came down to 2 points difference as the final siren went.
ROUND FOUR
In Round 4 the ladders began to take shape. The Division 1 Under 15 Girls had impressive victories with the Oakleigh Dragons defeating AJAX, Dragon Yana Ciorciari scored an incredible 5 goals the East Brighton Vampires JFC won against St Kilda City JFC. It was an outstanding performance from the Division 1 Under 15 Boys’ teams. East Malvern JFC had a strong victory, with their star goal scorers of the game being Fred Dendle (4 goals), Edward Cacopardo (3 goals), William Gray (3 goals) and Tom Quinn (3 goals).

ROUND FIVE
In Round 5 we had amazing competition in the Under 18 age group especially in Division 1 and 2. We would like to highlight the standout performances from the under 18 girls from Beaumaris Sharks.

In Round 5 Beaumaris put on an inaugural Shining Bright Round for Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones who tragically passed in November 2024. As former players of the team the club, and community, feel their loss tremendously. With inspiring support from members of the club and their community this special round was an amazing display of honour to the girls. “It was an amazing sportsmanship from Waverley Park Hawks for Beaumaris and Holly and Bianca.” At Banksia Reserve the Division 1 Girls brought their team to an astounding victory. As we are at the end of Round 6 the Beaumaris Sharks Division 1 Girls’ team is still first on the ladder and have a strong lead as they are yet to lose a match.
ROUND SIX

Round 6 was Monash University Round at SMJFL as we value our partnership with Monash University and appreciate their support and effort to contribute to discovering the leaders of tomorrow. As Round 6 ended the Under 18 Division 1 Boys ladder showed no sign of budging as Waverley Park Hawks held firm to their number one position.
Ormond was defeated by Waverly Park Hawks continuing their winning streak. However, Beaumaris FC is close on their tail as they continue to hold their number two position, and defeated Murrumbeena JFC. Congratulations to the many players at Beaumaris JFC who are celebrated their 50th and 100th games in round six. Well done Under 18 Division 1 Prahran boys for their 14-point victory against Beaumaris. Prahran's star scorer of the match was Charlie Canty with a spectacular 3 goals.

INTERLEAGUE RESULTS AND BEST ON GROUND PLAYERS
The AFL Victoria Metro Junior Development series kicked off on Wednesday 28th of May as SMJFL played against FDJFL. SMJFL performance across the board was outstanding and highlighted the pure talent of the SMJFL league teams. SMJFL dominated in Round 1 winning all 8 of their matches against FDJFL.

Both Under 15 Girls’ teams played at Lloyd Park, Division 1 Girls defeated FDJFL by 21 points and Division 2 Girls defeating them by 64 points. Gaby Noonan (Division 1) and Talia Franchina (Division 2) won best on ground.
The Under 15 Boys’ games were slightly closer in competition but SMJFL came out victorious. The Division 1 Boys won by 4 points, and the Division 2 boys won by 50 points. Darcy Moreland (Division 1), Zac Alter (Division 2) won best on ground. The Under 14 Girls dominated the field at Scammell Reserve. division 1 with an incredible 99-point victory, and division 2 with a 77-point win. Issi Milchman (Division 1) and Kaylee Lyons (Division 2) won best on ground.
The Under 14 Boys played at RSEA Park, the Division 1 Boys gaining a spectacular lead to win and the Division 2 Boys maintaining their lead as the games competition grew closer. Division 1 defeated FDJFL by 83 points, and Division 2 defeated them by 4 points. Marcus Rice (Division 1) and Broderick Coyne (Division 2) were best players on the night.
Round 2 of the Interleague matches shook up SMJFL’s lead as the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL) brough their A game to the field on Saturday 7th of June. All matches on Saturday were filled with heavy competitiveness and incredible performances of resilience and strength as the SMJFL teams were put to the test, some emerging victorious against strong competition.

The Under 15 Girls took on YJFL at Boss James Reserve and the tight scoring of the games lead to an entertaining watch. The Division 1 Girls just fall behind by 8 points. However, the Division 2 girls managed to snag their win by 11 points. Zahra Stevens (Division 1) and Sienna Leopold (Division 2) won best on ground. At RSEA Park the Under 15 Boys faced intense competition against YJFL. The Division 1 Boys defeated by 56 points as YJFL managed to gain a strong lead early and hold onto it. The Division 2 Boys managed to hold back YJFL’s high scoring and put on fierce competition, however they lost by 22 points. For the Under 15 Boys Fraser McCallum (Division 1) and Keidis Burmeister (Division 2) were our best.
The Under 14 Girls played tough against YJFL at Ford South Park on Saturday and the Division 1 Girls won by a close 4 points to secure the win in an otherwise challenging and exciting display of football. The Division 2 Girls were unable to beat YJFL as they were defeated by 28 points. Eliza Nicholls (Division 1) and Micah Hulme (Division 2) won the awards for SMJFL.

At Ford Park North the Under 14 Boys battled it out and held on resiliently but were unable to secure a win against YJFL. The Division 1 Boys were defeated by 20 points as YJFL showed dominant presence on the field. The Division 2 Boys were defeated by an upset of 42 points; however, they played with pride until the end of the match. Cooper Joy (Division 1) and Luca Sirianni (Division 2) won best on ground medals.
Round 3 of Interleague was an event to watch as SMJFL battled it out in the last round of the Metro Junior Development series against the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL), Western Football Netball League (WFNL), Essendon District Football League (EDFL), and Northern Football Netball League (NFNL) on Monday 9th of June. With three wins in total for the round SMJFL showed courage and perseverance.

The Division 1 Under 15 Girls secured an 8-point victory against NFNL. The Division 2 Under 15 Girls were defeated by EFNL by a close 3 points. Grace Anstess (Division 1) and Isabel Cahill (Division 2) won best on ground.
The under 15 boys’ teams were unsuccessful as they played EFNL. The Division 1 Boys were defeated by 25 points and the Division two boys lost by an upset of 84 points, however, both teams kept their heads up and pushed on until the end. Liam Basil (Division 1) and Xavier Parris (Division 2) won best on ground. The Under 14 Girls’ teams were both successful, Division 1 played WFNL and Division two played EDFL.
The Division 1 girls won by an impressive 77 points in a spectacular performance. The Division 2 girls defeated EDFL by 10 points in their tight game of 17 points to the EDFL’s 7 points. Elke Plevritis (Division 1) and Isla Rowe (Division 2) were our best. The Under 14 Boys’ teams were both unlucky with their games on Monday as EFNL displayed a united and robust performance. The Division 1 Boys lost by 16 points, and Division 2 were defeated by 47 points. Nicholas Norbury (Division 1) and Sebastian De Coning (Division 2) finished off the carnival spectacularly.

ROUND 7

Round 7 was Grill’d Round! The amazing team at Grill’d came down to Boss James Reserve to support the players and setup some fun activities with Grill’d vouchers to be won. The team at My Sport Live also came down to Boss James Reserve and live streamed from the ground for three entertaining and competitive matches. The Under 12 Mixed Hampton Rovers team brought home a strong 47-point victory at their grounds against the Caulfield Bears JFC. Hampton's star goal scorer for the game was Hayden Salter, who booted a stunning 6 goals.
ROUND 8

Round 8 showed some incredibly competitive games and the Under 13 age group did not disappoint. The Under 13 Girls Division 1 had AJAX JFC and East Malvern JFC battling it out for the win at Princes Park. After the first quarter, the tight competition was on full display as AJAX had 14-points to East Malvern’s 12-points. In the second quarter East Malvern stepped up their game and scored two goals and two behinds to jump ahead with 28 points against AJAX’s 20 points. Nevertheless, the game was not finished switching leads and East Malvern once again regained their lead and brought home a 14-point victory. East Malvern had 6 different goal scorers throughout the game who brought the victory home, Indiah Hay scoring 2 of them.
ROUND 9 – TeamSports4All Round

Round 9 was TeamSports4All Round! The players from an array of teams supported TeamSports4All by wearing their colourful socks. TeamSports4All is an amazing charity that provides opportunity for those who are disadvantaged to be able to play team sports, helping communities and building safe spaces for kids to participate in team sports.
At Le Page Park the lovely people from TeamSports4All came down to the matches at the Cheltenham Panthers home ground, promoting their charity and their cause.

The Under 15 Girls at Cheltenham Panthers brought their A game securing a 17-point victory against Brighton Beach/Hampton Rovers. The match was tight, each team was eager to get a score on the board. However, after halftime the Panthers leaped into action and stopped any scoring from their opposition in the third quarter. Bianca De Filippis scored 2 incredible goals for the Panthers.
