Sunday 10th May 2026
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
This Sunday's footy doubled as a very special occasion, with games falling on Mother's Day, the sidelines were filled with mums cheering on their kids in what made for a really memorable weekend of junior football.
To every mum who packed the bags, drove to the ground, stood on the boundary in the cold, and cheered their hearts out, this one's for you. Happy Mother's Day from everyone at the SMJFL!
SPECIAL MENTION - PETER MARTIN

A milestone worth celebrating.
Peter Martin officiated his 1,350th game this week - an extraordinary achievement that speaks to his dedication and love of the game.
What makes it even more special? The ground where he reached that milestone is Murphy Reserve - the very same ground where Peter was part of the team that played the first ever game there, back in his days with Port Colts Junior Football Club.
From that first game at Murphy Reserve to his 1,350th as an umpire. What a story. Congratulations, Peter - the SMJFL is lucky to have you.
MATCH OF THE ROUND
East Brighton Vampires U14 Girls AINLEY def. Mordi-Brae U14 Girls BILLING by 14 points
E Brighton 6.6 (42) def. Mordi-Brae 4.4 (28) | Elsternwick Park #2
With both sides coming into the game at 2 wins and 1 loss, this one was always going to be a contest, and it delivered.
The first half was a tight, low-scoring arm wrestle with neither side able to pull away, East Brighton holding a slender 10-3 lead at the main break. It was the kind of first half where both teams were clearly feeling each other out, and it was anyone's game heading into the third quarter.
That's when East Brighton took control. They kicked away decisively in the third term, turning a close game into a commanding lead and putting themselves in the box seat. To their credit, Mordi-Brae fought hard in the final quarter and made the Vampires earn every point, but East Brighton had enough in the tank to hold on and run out 14-point winners.
Maisie Bavin and Sophie Hearn were the standouts for East Brighton, driving the game forward when it mattered most, while Milla Nachtigal was excellent for Mordi-Brae and gave her side every chance. A quality contest between two evenly matched sides.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
East Malvern U11 Mixed SANGSTER def. Bentleigh U11 Mixed BURGESS by 48 points
East Malvern 11.11 (77) def. Bentleigh 4.5 (29) | Stanley Grose Oval
A breakthrough win for East Malvern, who had been searching for their first victory of the year after a tough run of results, including a narrow loss to a strong Brighton side just the week before. On Sunday they finally got it, and they got it in style, building throughout the game and running away convincingly in the end.
Maxwell Lynch was the standout performer on the day, putting in a strong all-round display that made him impossible to ignore. Oscar Ritchie showed plenty of promise for Bentleigh in a tough day for his side.
Beaumaris U17.5 Boys SHARKS drew with AJAX U17.5 Boys COMETS
Beaumaris 9.11 (65) def. AJAX 10.5 (65) | Jack Barker Oval
A draw! What a contest it was to get there. Beaumaris and AJAX traded blows all day in a back-and-forth battle that had momentum swinging both ways across all four quarters. AJAX held the early advantage, but Beaumaris came storming home, kicking 4 goals to 2 in the final term to level it up at the end.
Christopher Lucas was Beaumaris's best, putting in a strong performance when his side needed it most, while Asher Kave was equally impressive for AJAX kicking 3. On a day when neither side deserved to lose, a draw felt like a fitting result.
Murrumbeena U11 Girls LIONESSES def. St Peters U11 Girls RECUPERO by 26 points
Murrumbeena 7.9 (51) def. St Peters 4.1 (25) | Murrumbeena Park
A first win of the season for Murrumbeena, and they earned it against a St Peters side who came in with two wins from two.
The Lionesses controlled the contest from the opening quarter, building a handy lead and never really looking back. Credit to St Peters, who were short on numbers but showed tremendous fight and heart throughout, kicking four goals in the second half to finish the game strongly.
For Murrumbeena, a first win will do wonders for confidence, and against a team sitting undefeated, it's a result to be proud of.
PLAYER OF THE ROUND
Mason Cornale
WPHawks U13 Mixed GEORGIOS
It's hard to miss Mason Cornale on the footy field, the helmet gives it away, but it's what's underneath it that truly stands out. Mason is the kind of player who leads by example, attacking the ball with real courage and physicality every single time it hits the ground. Hard at it, competitive, and never takes a backward step.
On Sunday he was at his best, driving WPHawks to a convincing 37-point win over Mordi-Brae with another gutsy, high-impact display. WPHawks head into Round 5 undefeated, and Mason's leadership and attack on the ball has been central to that. A player his teammates feed off, keep it up, Mason!
