TEAM PERFORMANCE OF THE ROUND
Ormond U17.5 Boys BURT def. Beaumaris U17.5 Boys SHARKS by 26 points
Ormond 9.7 (61) def. Beaumaris 5.5 (35) | Jack Barker Oval
Two sides coming off dominant wins, a wet and windy afternoon, and multiple lead changes, this one had it all.
With the conditions keeping scoring relatively low, both teams had to grind for every opportunity. Beaumaris came out of the blocks strong, holding the lead at the main break and threatening to upset an Ormond side that had looked unstoppable in the opening two rounds. Ormond steadied after half-time however, kicking clear in the third quarter before closing the game out with authority in the final term.
Ren Zavalianos was the standout for the victors, booting three goals in difficult conditions, while Harry Robertson was composed and reliable throughout. For Beaumaris, Xavier Bence finished with two goals and Will Spink was influential, but ultimately it wasn't enough to hold off a determined Ormond outfit.
These two sides look destined to meet again later in the season, and if this contest is anything to go by, it will be another one worth watching.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Bentleigh U14 Mixed HEELIS def. Highett/Cheltenham Panthers U14 Mixed FAHEY by 5 points
Bentleigh 9.4 (58) def. Highett/Cheltenham Panthers 8.5 (53) | King George Reserve
Bentleigh looked to have this one wrapped up by three quarter time, holding a commanding 39-point lead, but the final term made for some nervous moments.
The Panthers kept coming and made a real contest of it in the last quarter, refusing to go away and making Bentleigh work right until the final siren. In the end, the five-point margin tells the story of a side that had to dig deep to bank the four points.
William Retemeyer was the difference for Bentleigh, finishing with four goals in a match-winning performance. For Highett/Cheltenham, Lenny McGuire was their standout, giving everything for his side until the end.
Caulfield Bears U17.5 Boys WEBB def. Oakleigh Dragons U17.5 Boys DRAGONS by 10 points
Caulfield Bears 10.7 (67) def. Oakleigh Dragons 9.3 (57) | Koornang Park
A milestone-filled afternoon at Koornang Park, as Caulfield Bears held off a determined Oakleigh Dragons side to claim a 10-point victory.
The game was tight throughout, with Oakleigh refusing to make it easy for a Bears side that had to work hard for every score. In the end, Caulfield's experience and firepower proved the difference in a contest that could have gone either way deep into the final term.
The afternoon was made extra special with Sebastian Sparrow-Cooper and Darcy Stewart both playing their 100th game, a special milestone for two players who are very important to the team. Luca Cipriani was once again the standout, booting seven goals for the second week running after taking out last week's Player of the Round honours. For Oakleigh, Troy Morton was dangerous up forward with three goals while Lachlan Wilks was their best, doing everything he could to drag the Dragons over the line.
Murrumbeena U11 Girls LIONESSES def. St Peters U11 Girls RECUPERO by 26 points
Murrumbeena 7.9 (51) def. St Peters 4.1 (25) | Murrumbeena Park
A first win of the season for Murrumbeena, and they earned it against a St Peters side who came in with two wins from two.
The Lionesses controlled the contest from the opening quarter, building a handy lead and never really looking back. Credit to St Peters, who were short on numbers but showed tremendous fight and heart throughout, kicking four goals in the second half to finish the game strongly.
For Murrumbeena, a first win will do wonders for confidence, and against a team sitting undefeated, it's a result to be proud of.
PLAYER OF THE ROUND
Coco Fregoni
South Melbourne Districts u18 Girls
Coco Fregoni was simply too good on Sunday, and earns herself a well-deserved Round 3 Player of the Round.
South Melbourne Districts continued their undefeated start to the season with a 19-point victory over a strong AJAX side, and Coco was at the heart of everything good about their performance. From the opening bounce she was a presence that AJAX simply couldn't contain, winning contested ball with ease and providing a reliable target up forward that her teammates could lean on throughout the contest.
Her work in the air was a particular highlight, marking strongly and winning her individual battles consistently, she set the tone for a South Melbourne Districts side that is quickly establishing themselves as one to watch in the U18 Girls competition this season. She finished with two goals to her name, but the scoreboard doesn't tell the full story of just how influential she was across four quarters.
