‘WELCOME BACK TO FOOTY’ CARNIVAL

The South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) will open it’s 2022 season with a ‘Welcome Back to Footy’ carnival on Sunday 10 April at Highett Reserve, Highett and Moorleigh Reserve, Bentleigh East.

After two consecutive COVID affected football seasons, the league is kicking off the season with a lightning carnival for our Under 8’s & 9’s Mixed competitions.

The lightning carnival will feature 84 games across four ovals at both venues, with pools of four teams playing back-to-back matches with modified rules to give the kids a healthy dose of footy they have all been craving.

“We couldn’t be more excited for this Sunday” said SMJFL CEO Matthew Brown.

“It’s been tough for the SMJFL community these past two years, people just want to be involved in footy,”

“It’s especially exciting for all our younger players, who can hopefully get to experience a full season of football.”

Games will feature two 12-minute halves followed by an 11-minute break between matches one and two.

“For a lot of our (Under) 8’s & 9’s, this is their first games of footy” said SMJFL General Manager – Football Operations Bree Vallance.

“We want them to have the best possible footballing experience we can deliver, and after the last couple of seasons, it’s just getting the kids out there playing.”

The ‘Welcome Back to Footy’ carnival coincides with SMJFL Major Sponsor Monash University’s Leadership Round, which will once again launch the SMJFL Monash Leader of the Year Award.

“Monash University have been a proud supporter of the South Metro Junior Football League since 2017 and we can’t wait for the start of the SMJFL season this Sunday,” said Monash University representative Eliana Ulusan.

“Monash (University) will be in attendance for the ‘Welcome Back to Footy’ Carnival at Highett Reserve this Sunday to help celebrate launch the season with the amazing SMJFL community.”

“There may even be the eventual Monash University Leader of the Year playing at Highett on Sunday!”
