The South Metro Junior Football League Umpire Academy is stepping into 2026 with a refreshed new look, launching a redesigned Umpire Uniform with the backing of the academy’s new naming rights partner, TLC Healthcare.

“The SMJFL is delighted to welcome TLC Healthcare as the naming rights partner of the SMJFL Umpire Academy. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to supporting the development, wellbeing and progression of our umpires, who play a critical role in the success of junior football across our league” said Jamie Howden, SMJFL CEO.

TLC CEO Lou Pascuzzi highlighted that "Supporting the SMJFL Umpire Academy is about backing those in our community who are putting their hand up to be part of something bigger than themselves. That kind of selfless community contribution resonates deeply with TLC. We have built our entire model around the belief that strong communities do not happen by accident; they need organisations that show up, not just with their name, but with real commitment."

Aimed at modernising the appearance and comfort of match-day officiating, Umpires across the TLC Healthcare SMJFL Umpire Academy will transition to wearing crew socks and an untucked shirt on match day in 2026. This marks a shift away from the traditional uniform of knee-high socks and tucked-in shirts that has long been associated with umpiring.

The updated design reflects a more modern, comfortable and relaxed approach, and by prioritising comfort and style the SMJFL hopes to enhance the experience for over 900 umpires in 2026.

SMJFL CEO, Jamie Howden, highlighted “Moving to crew socks and an untucked shirt from 2026 is a positive, modern change for SMJFL umpires. It’s about being more comfortable and confident on match day, while also making sure the presentation matches modern officiating and appeals to the next generation of umpires”.

Importantly, the new uniform also aims to break down barriers to entry for prospective Umpires. The SMJFL Umpire Academy plays a significant role in the pathway of up-and-coming umpires toward AFL and AFLW officiating, whilst having a significant impact on our game across the region. This refreshed look is designed to be more inclusive and appealing, supporting the Academy’s goals of increasing recruitment and improving retention.

“This new initiative represents a step forward in ensuring umpires are comfortable and confident in match-day. It is a significant step forward in how we support and present our umpires across the league” said Portia Ronsberg, Head of Umpiring, SMJFL.
