Today SMJFL Chair, Brooke Hannaford, advised of Richard Bowen’s decision to step down from the SMJFL Board.
The SMJFL Board and staff would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Richard’s significant contribution to the South Metro Junior Football League.
Richard has been an exceptional member of the SMJFL Board since being elected at the AGM in 2018. He has made an outstanding contribution to many aspects of the SMJFL including helping to navigate the turbulent COVID years, our return to play during and post the pandemic, and ensuring that we meet our governance and fiduciary requirements of our wonderful community-focused organisation.
From 2021 to 2024, Richard led the SMJFL as Board Chair with passion, vision, and an unwavering commitment to good governance. He was instrumental in creating the Reconciliation Action Plan, the 2021–2024 Strategic Plan, and guiding the league to adopt a skills-based Board. Under his leadership, two CEOs were recruited to meet the organisation’s evolving needs, the league’s financial position remained strong, and new opportunities were embraced to grow footy in the region. Richard championed collaboration — strengthening relationships between the Board, Clubs, AFL Vic, and other stakeholders — and inspired innovative thinking across the organisation. Through his work on multiple Board Sub-Committees, including chairing the Community & Facilities Committee and serving as an inaugural member of the Grading Committee, Richard leaves a lasting legacy of progress, connection, and community spirit.
Richard’s resignation from the SMJFL Board was effective from the recent Board Meeting, and his decision was made after careful consideration, believing that the time was right. Work commitments have increased for Richard, making it harder to meet the obligations and commitments required of an SMJFL Board Member.
The SMJFL community is indebted to Richard for his contribution and his vision for ensuring the governance of the SMJFL is focused on our values of Fun, Accountable, Innovative and Respectful.
Richard’s resignation has created a vacant Board position. Consistent with the SMJFL’s Statement of Purpose & Rules and the short time frame between now and our Annual General Meeting, the Board has determined that the position will remain vacant for the balance of 2025. The position will then be able to be filled at the 2025 AGM. Further information regarding the election of this Board position at the 2025 AGM will be issued to all Clubs in due course.
