Sunday 31st May 2026
This week, the SMJFL along with the wider community, was saddened to hear of the loss of Neale Daniher. Throughout his life, Neale made a monumental contribution to the game of Australian Football, and also to the raising of awareness and funds for research to cure motor neurone disease.
At many of our matches this week, teams paid tribute to Neale through moments of silence, blue armbands, hair ribbons, socks and fundraising for MND.
MATCH OF THE ROUND
Caulfield Bears U17.5 Boys WEBB def. St Peters/Murrumbeena U17.5 Boys LIONS by 3 points
Caulfield 9.8 (62) def. St Peters/Murrumbeena 9.5 (59) | Koornang Park
A contest too close to call unfolded between Caulfield Bears and St Peters/Murrumbeena, with only three points splitting the difference between these two teams.
Both teams have had a mixed run of results so far this season, so pitting them head-to-head always promised an interesting matchup. Both teams started neck and neck, both finishing the first quarter with 2 goals and 3 points, before Caulfield broke away in the second to lead by 6 points. The tide turned in the third quarter with St Peters/Murrumbeena garnering an 18-point lead, but a scoreless final quarter proved costly as Caulfield edged in front by just 3 points to take the game.
This was a gripping game of footy that had everyone on the edge of their seats until the final siren.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Murrumbeena/St Peters U15 Boys GRIFFINS def. Ormond U15 Boys GWYNNE by 28 points
Murrumbeena/St Peters 9.9 (63) def. Ormond 4.11 (35) | E.E. Gunn Reserve
You wouldn’t know it from the final score, but this match featured a remarkable turnaround from Murrumbeena.
Starting the match on the back foot, Murrumbeena scored only one goal in the first quarter to Ormond’s 2.2. But everything changed in the second term, with Murrumbeena putting away an impressive 5 goals and 4 points while only allowing Ormond a single point. Ormond found a second wind after half time, but ultimately Murrumbeena were able to hold them back to secure the win.
AJAX U12 Mixed JETS def. AJAX U12 Mixed FALCONS by 7 points
AJAX JETS 9.10 (64) def. AJAX Falcons 9.3 (57) | Princes Park
We had a thrilling derby on our hands down at Princes Park, with the sides separated by only a handful of points.
By the end of the first quarter, the FALCONS were up by a goal and a point, but the JETS hit back in the second to garner a 20-point advantage by half time. The FALCONS had a late surge, scoring 30 points in the final quarter, but ultimately the final siren sounded with just over a goal separating the teams.
East Malvern U14 Girls VESELY def. Mordialloc-Braeside U14 Girls BILLING by 2 points
East Malvern 4.5 (29) def. Mordi-Brae 3.9 (27) | DW Lucas Oval
A low-scoring U14 Girls match set the stage for an impressive second-half surge from Mordi-Brae.
East Malvern started off strong, scoring 20 points in the first quarter to Mordi-Brae’s 2. The Knights added another 8 points in the second term while Mordi-Brae managed just a single behind, extending the margin to 25 at half time.
But the momentum shifted dramatically after the bread. East Malvern chalked up just one more point for the remainder of the match, while Mordi-Brae worked their way back to just a 2-point margin.
PLAYER OF THE ROUND
Ruby Page
East Brighton U16 Girls STEVENS
With 10 goals under her belt, our Player of the Round is East Brighton Vampires’ Ruby Page. This week saw her deliver a dominant display for her team in a decisive victory over Murrumbeena. This was her highest scoring game of the season so far, having kicked one additional goal in Round 5 against East Malvern. Ruby is one to watch in the future and is a member of the Sandringham Dragons U16 team.
