MATCH OF THE ROUND
Highett/Cheltenham Panthers U15 Boys KNOWLES def. AJAX U15 Boys JETS by 1 point
Highett/Cheltenham 4.9 (33) def. AJAX 4.8 (32) | Princes Park (Caulfield South)
One point. Again. AJAX will know the feeling well after winning by the same margin just last week, but on Sunday it was Highett/Cheltenham Panthers who got to celebrate at the final siren in a contest that had everyone on the boundary locked in.
For Highett, this was their first close game of the year, and they handled the pressure brilliantly. AJAX led at half time and looked to be in control heading into the final quarter, but the Panthers dug deep when it mattered most, kicking away late to steal a famous one-point victory.
Liam Curtis was the standout for Highett, playing a key role in getting his side over the line, while Elijah Lloyd was excellent for AJAX in a heartbreaking losing effort. A brilliant game of junior footy, one point the difference in the end.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
St. Bedes Mentone Tigers U11 Mixed RED def. Caulfield Bears U11 Mixed O'KANE by 9 points
SBMT 7.3 (45) def. Caulfield Bears 5.6 (36) | Koornang Park
A solid win for St. Bedes, and one that came with a twist before the first bounce even sounded. With both sides sporting similar coloured jerseys, the St Bedes boys had to flip their jumpers inside out before the game, never the ideal preparation, but it clearly didn't affect them one bit.
It's been a remarkable turnaround for this group. After losing their first four grading games, they have now won two in a row and sit fourth on the ladder, a credit to the effort and attitude this group has shown in recent weeks. Ned Culph led the way up forward with 3 goals in another strong team display. If this form continues, they'll be a side nobody wants to face come finals time
Highett/Cheltenham Panthers U12 Girls MIDDLETON def. Prahran JFC U12 Girls PAYNE by 1 point
Highett/Cheltenham 5.2 (32) def. Prahran 4.7 (31) | Como Park
Another one-pointer to add to the collection this week! Highett/Cheltenham Panthers U12 Girls trailed for much of the contest, with Prahran holding the lead heading into the final quarter. The Panthers had other ideas, storming home in the last term to snatch a one-point win at the final siren in a finish that would have had everyone on the boundary holding their breath.
It's now two wins from two since grading was completed for the Panthers, a side clearly hitting their stride at the right time.
Beaumaris U11 Mixed SHARKS def. East Malvern U11 Mixed SANGSTER by 6 points
Beaumaris 5.8 (38) def. East Malvern 4.8 (32) | Donald McDonald Reserve
A tight contest that went back and forth all day. East Malvern led at quarter time and made Beaumaris work hard for every score throughout, but the Sharks gradually built their advantage and held on for a 6-point win. Blaise Thompson was strong all day for Beaumaris, while Humphrey Cooper was one of East Malvern's best in a spirited performance from the losing side.
PLAYER OF THE ROUND
Lucy Teixeira
East Malvern U14 Girls Vesely
Four goals and a dominant team performance, Lucy Teixeira was at her best as East Malvern ran out massive winners over Murrumbeena. As captain of the side, Lucy led by example all day, finishing with 4 goals in a display that showcased exactly why she is one of the most exciting young players in the competition.
Off the field, Lucy is a member of the St. Kilda Saints Academy, and on days like Sunday, it's easy to see why. Composed, damaging, and a natural leader. One to watch.
